Just Say NO to Black Friday

Stay home, eat leftovers and drink massive quantities of coffee and hot chocolate and watch some good movies!

I never understood chasing after a good deal . . . . on stuff that will only be stuff later on.  Of course, I never used to be a cash and carry girl.  That changed in June and my life has been so different!  I am freer than I ever have been not being a slave to my plastic!

Those of you out there, oh, brave ones that you are!  Be careful and try to remain calm and nice!

So, we'll sit back and do our shopping later . . . we already know what we are buying the kids.  I already know what is going to the extended families (goodie boxes of HI stuff).  For me, the plan is the hardest.  Execution will happen when I have the cash.

Hello, Monday!

Even better, get your shopping in before Thanksgiving, like I did this year! Now I can sit back and enjoy Advent to its fullest knowing Christmas shopping is taken care of!

I have to admit, I've always wanted to get my shopping done this early, but this is the first year I've actually done it. Big sigh of relief!

The trouble with our shopping ahead like that is that I tend to go overboard and keep shopping. I never knew when to quit. Our plans are to get the PS3 for SB and a Notebook (each) for the younger two. It's big money items and that's all they'll get. I think spending that much is ridiculous, even, but every few years we do this (one year it was expensive bikes). I just think Christmas is so over done by so many folks that I get sick in my stomach about the gifts. I wonder how other folks in our paygrade (w/ stay at home moms) afford getting each kid an iPod, PS3's, games to go with them, etc. etc. It has to be on credit at some point . . . and we're not willing to do that.

We are trying to teach our kids "want less, do more for others" "be happy with what you have" etc., and that "it's Advent, then Christmas . . . neither of which are done properly if the focus is on gifts - getting and/or giving"

No Wii's in my home. My kids do not get ipods either. They do have a hand held DS game thingy that they want new games for. We keep it low key around here.

I did go out today only because my DH was going shopping for some hunting stuff on his day off and I wanted to be with him.

I did get a coat for my daughter for 13 bucks at sears that had a price tag of 60 bucks. My one good deal. It wasnt too bad. Never did the black friday thing before and will avoid it in the future. Too crazy out there.

I agree. Who wants to spend the day after Thanksgiving shopping when you can spend it with family and delicious leftovers?

I have to put in a good word for good ol' Black Friday. Although, this year, I did not get up before 5 am ( I headed out at 7:30) I still managed to get some good deals, flannel sheets for all the kids for less than $100, new towels at $3 ea! Plus the audio bible set I was looking for at half off.
I also managed to get all the Christmas shopping done. After reading Mau's post about it earlier, I really wanted to get this done before Advent.
The crowds this year were manageable and no more crazy than any other days will be in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
So, black Friday can be, like Martha says, a good thing!

Great post! We finished a week ago. All I have left is a sweater for my FIL. I did, however, go to 2 craft stores for items we were short for our annual ornament.

I stayed home..played games with my grandyboys..fed em food..hugged and kissed their sweet heads..made a homemade JESUS ADVENT calendar with Jordan, ate yummy leftovers, staying in jammies until 2 pm....made em hot chocolate with marshmellows..talked with their mom for an hour when she came to get them..listened to Christmas music...looked at very old photos and laughed.........Dad got his Christmas lights up..partially...it was a nice day!
Crazy black friday is nonsense..Danny took Crista to work at 4 am..and he said it was true shoppers lined up outside of Target...INSANE!!! Would people go to see Jesus in the freakin middle of the night...not many...only 24 Adoration adorers!

Dawn - I am not going to argue there are great deals to be had, HOWEVER, I'm not near disciplined enough. I loathe crowds and usually have run-ins with the rudest folk to walk the Earth. I have "please bug me and piss me off 'cos I won't do anything about it but bellyache at my husband later" stamped all over me.

I guess I'd rather do anything but buy stuff right now. I have a NEED list a mile long. I am going to buy/order an Oreck Steam-It machine Monday. It looks like a great floor steamer (has other uses as well) for the price and there's a store in Honolulu if I have issues with it (unlike for Shark, which has gotten complaints about it's weak/wonky handle and so-so cleaning ability). Other than that, we are getting the kids expensive items (you can't argue that: $400 each kid is absolutely obnoxious). But, there it is.

I was (and still am) happy to get my wardrobe rounded out at Christmas as a kid/teen . . . my kids are, too, but it's not like they need winter clothes here or flannel sheets . . .

. . . and I am not knocking anyone who has the money to really indulge their kids . . . we can't do it all; it's either the big ticket item or a bunch of junk.

Can y'all tell I hate commercialized Christmas? I feel so bummed out this time of year . . . No extended family - EVER - and shopping is so bor-ring to never get to see anyone open what you send.

I'm going to finish decorating a bit around here. We'll be putting our tree up tonight or some time tomorrow.

I am committed to last-minute shopping. Seems that Christmas always sneaks up on me. I am never aware enough to take advantage of Black Friday sales -- and I would not want to be among the throngs, anyway.

I almost manage to not shop today. Didn't because I took my granddaughter to basketball practice. It was only one hour. It would have taken me that long to drive home and turn around and go get her so I went to Kohls. While I was in there a very cute pair of boots jumped off the shelf and onto Olivia's feet. They fit her perfectly so we called her mommy and she said she needed them so we bought them. $49.95 marked down to 16.99 with an additional 15% off. Could not not get them.
After that, I picked up Shaylene and we went home for the rest of the day.

This was the first year I went out on Black Friday. I did it more to get out of the house and regroup from a hectic (but fun) day of hosting my first Thanksgiving. I woke up on my own at 4:45 a.m. (don't know why), so I thought I'd just go ... I ran around town. Got a coffee. If the lines were too long (like at Wal-Mart—all the way to the back of the store!), I just left. Nothing is that worth it to me. To save a few bucks? It's almost worth the extra money to NOT have to wait in a two-hour-long line, IMO. But I did find a couple good deals for me (oops! =) and a few gifts. It was overall fun, but I didn't have any high expectations for having to get certain "door-busters." I don't know that I'll do it next year, but it was a fun (alone!) outing yesterday ...
