I'm Quite Daft, Actually

I was supposed to register both my older children for school today. I managed to get into the middle school office and . . . at least they were so nice to me. I was five minutes over the "last minute" for registering. However, the lady who assisted me was so kind. Instead of curtly telling me to return tomorrow between such and such a time, she said, "Here's the packet you can take home and bring back tomorrow; I'll photo copy these items so that you'll essentially be in the office for a few minutes tomorrow." Wow. I can't say the schools were ever as kind in Maryland. Here, you walk in a place and people are glad to see you (even if they are faking it, they are faking it so well I can't see it or even sense it). Many times in Maryland when I would ring up the school or pop in to take care of business, they would look up inconspicuously (not to get your attention or to let you know they know you're there) and mutter under their breath, "I'll be with you in a minute." After about five minutes, they would heave a loud, drawn out sigh, and lumber over and help - sort of. If this was how I was greeted I would know I would be heading home grumbling under my breath, "Geez, you think these people would be glad to even be employed!"

So, yes, I am (so far) impressed by the kindness and helpfulness of the school's I've encountered thus far. I hope that the high school tomorrow morning will be the same. With SB registered, I can do that middle school drop off and be on my way. I have to get on the road early, though, now that I know that after 11:30am the business can't get done (the secretary in charge works until then; it's summer break, she deserves it).

Lost another ball over the building from the tennis court this afternoon. It's hilarious! Good thing I bought two more cans today at the Navy Exchange (NEx). At a few cents over $2/can, I'm going to charge per ball from said child (SB is the champ at launching them over to our neighbouring building). We are just trying to learn "the serve" (God in Heaven, help my youngest) and volleying (we all need help here, Lord) before we even get to playing a game. It takes time, but it sure is fun.

Have a great night, all. I should say "morning" as it's nearing the hour those on the east coast will be rising.

in reply to your comment on why I like granite in the kitchen. It doesn't scratch. It's part of a nature brought in side..it's interesting to look at. It's cool to the touch. It's great for baking. It's very durable and most of all..it's already paid for :) I don't have to "upgrade". Love it. Love you! I wish they had a cherry granite. I'd buy that.

This is so cute! When the staff at the schools treat you so badly, does it make you wonder how they treat your kids?

At my kids first elementary school, the secretary was quite cranky, but since I volunteered constantly and practically lived there, we got along fine. When my oldest graduated from 6th grade, she made a comment I will never forget..."I don't know why they're bothering to send them to middle school, they should go straight from here to jail!" Wow! They were quite an unruly bunch, but jail at 12 years old? It was hard to see the love in her heart!

Sarah,
I'm glad it worked out for registering the middle school child. It's always a daunting process. This year, I'll have three in school and the paperwork is different for each grade.
Now I'm dealing with supply lists (oh, Lord help me!) and will be getting their uniforms together in the next few weeks!
Tennis is such good exercise! I try to avoid that at all costs!
Blessings to you!
Oh...I need your address.

Oh I love tennis. I am actually semi-good at the game. I played in High School and took a course in College.

Last time I played with my boys, one of them launched it into the pool next to the courts. The pool was closed but my kid scaled the fence and rescued our ball. He then hits it back at me and I miss the ball then goes into the only hole in the fence and down the hill to the creek below. Those tennis balls have a mind of their own!!!

Dawn - all fine reasons to like granite; I would agree. Like I said, the biggest thing for me is not being able to see if it's wet/not wet and clean/not clean - this condo's granite is dark. The granite in the bathroom is light but I still have the same issue w/ wet/not wet. I know, I'm weird.

Anne - wowzie, that would be hard to see the love in that lady for sure; that is pretty much the attitude of adults now. It goes back to the parents letting go of their authority and breathing down the school's necks to change policies so that kids have more rights than what they know to do with. They lost the balance. From my experience with kids, most of them are good and from families that want them to be good. There are a few, regardless of parentage, that just are stinkers . . . but no one should love them any less as that would only suggest to them that they are right in their behaviour of self destruction.

Mwah! KM - I need to see if I still have your email. Since we last exchanged words, we got a new PC and we moved and email stuff changed . . . I'll see if I have yours and go from there. Miss you! Always wishing you well.

Nancy - uniforms, supply lists! Yes, I have those, but they aren't as bad here as they were in MD. Uniforms for my youngest consist in tee shirt with school mascot and khaki pants/shorts. I looked at the Navy Exchange yesterday for size 12 . . . nothing. they have size 8 out the wazoo. Of course! My girl will have to wear the uniform shirt and a PE uniform. I'm not sure about my high school boy. We'll find out today. Yeah! I'll email you my address.

Kissteen - love it. I love it when the ball soars . . . but it stinks when they are lost lost lost!!

Therese, most schools start end of July, literally. My older two start the first week of Aug. Here, they go year round, they get in the 180 days . . . no bad weather days so they have to add in cushion days (I can't remember . .. oh, they call them waiver days).

Suzanne - we are six hours behind EST. It was quite an adjustment. I grew up outside of Seattle (PST is three hours) so at least I can call family until about 8pm my time. :)

Wow. Hopefully, it is just a well run school across the board. The tennis balls....LOL. Sound like fun.
