Diamond Head's original name in ancient Hawaiian is Laeahi, which translated means "brow of the tuna". The story goes that in the 1800's British sailors (oh, of course!) saw calcite crystals glittering in the sunlight from this spot and assumed it was because there were diamonds there, but they were mistaken. Fort Ruger occupied the crater after the U.S. annexed HI in 1898. Although it is (obviously) no longer used for military defense, it is a great place to take a stroll. Okay, one heck-of-a hike (there are a gazillion stairs, you need to bring water and a flashlight . . . there's a tunnel, you see). We are going to do this hike during the winter months one morning. Even with plenty of water, I fear we would die, actually, if we went any sooner.

With Skies Like This . . .
Who could be unhappy?

The photo above was taken at the Honolulu Zoo, which offered another neat view of Diamond Head.

Anne - where and when have I been getting crummy messages??? I'm baffled as to what you mean?
Nancy - thanks so much; i'll come by and fetch it and post it later. :)
great palm tree pic. that angle is wonderful!!! you are already working on different angles!
and. flashlight? tunnel? die?
stick to those sandy beaches darlin'. those other words are just plain scary! :)
regan - my girl took the one of the palms. she has "it" like you do! the other one was taken my moi. ahem. anywhoooooo, the hike has two stair cases and an unlit tunnel. when we go, i'll take pics to share, of course. :) i'll try new angles when we do.
Gorgeous sky! It is so neat to be sharing this new experience with you via your blogs!
Thanks, Sarah, for always coming by. My girl takes some pretty great shots. I have proven you can take bad ones, so to speak. Even with her better camera! Some times I direct her to take certain pics 'cos hers turns out better. Oh well. No jealousy . . . I'm proud of her and in awe of the skill or "eye" as I call it.
you know, i think so much "good" picture taking depends on 2 things lighting-lots of natural light and luck. angles are good, too. but also not being afraid to snap away. a lot of times the perfect shot is happening and you just have to be the annoying paparazzi, snap, snapping away, capturing all of your treasured family moments before they slip away. ok. so maybe that was 4 things, but you get what i mean, right? and your girl does have a good eye. mine does too. i love looking at things from her perspective. no jealousy either.
in the end i think sometimes it is just fate when one captures an "aha!" moment on film. forever cementing that exact moment in time, much like the eye of God does, for better or for worse.in black and white. or color.
i'm on vacation all next week. can i please, please, please come visit you!?!? :)
