"Wherever applause breaks out in the liturgy because of some human achievement, it is a sure sign that the essence of liturgy has totally disappeared and been replaced by a kind of religious entertainment." Ratzinger "Spirit of the Liturgy"
Listen, if the Pope thinks applauding visitors, those celebrating birthday's and anniversary's - and let's not forget to applaud the choir!! - is WRONG and liturgical abuse: Can we stop it already?!?
Every Sunday our parish does this and I.loathe.it. I know that in our military chapel Jesus has already been neatly tucked back in the Tabernacle in a room off the narthex, but really, people! Can we NOT applaud . . . it just unnerving. Put that shit in the bulletin - where it does not interrupt Mass - or better yet, at Coffee and Donuts, thank the choir or what-have-you.
Just my two cents.

It's the same mentality of those who applaud Joe Biden at his new Catholic Church in DC.
He received Holy Communion on Sunday and they applauded him...like..."Hurray! another Catholic who devalues Christ's presence in the Eucharist and doesn't care about Church teaching."
Suffer the children...
Lord have mercy on our souls....
Trying this again! My old parish was like that, but where we go now-NEVER would there be applause! Thank God!
HERE! HERE!
Quite right!
I agree and we have to deal with it here - but it sure beats a lot of the other abuses I've seen...
That being said, I have given you a "Lemonade Award" along with 9 other bloggers on my blog today.
Enjoy.
God bless ya!

The other thing we have to consider is time. There is a gospel group that follows after our Mass and many times these "announcements" go into their time when they are setting up. They have drums and all kinds of stuff to set up to get ready for their service.
Our parish does it once in a while, for big Anniversaries, I hate it! They should get those applauses at their own personal party not at Mass!
Great post on this!!
We aren't allowed to applaud in church and I am most thankful for that.
I know alot of pastors are cutting some of this stuff out. Some are creating a more sacred place by coming out and asking the children (adults) to shut it up when they come in! Isn't it sad we have had to be told this? I know I learned better and have slowly been at fault. I'm working very much on not saying anything until we get out and back into the world. I'm also finding myself praying more after Holy Communion and not "watching" others recieve...hey that is THEIR time with the Lord and I should be having my own quiet prayer time and MYOB. Good post, girl!
I couldn't agree more. As a cantor I find it completely embarassing that people would applaud. Another good quote I heard recently was "How is it plausible that a slave could receive accolades in his Master's home." Bravo for your outstanding post.
I'm so glad to hear that the pope is with me on this one (he's with me -- did you get that?). I refuse to applaud in church and it makes me feel falsely pious, but now that I know the pope's on my side...
Jamie - agreed.
Mimi - You'd think the whole of the RC's would get this point, huh?
Suz - I always keep my eyes shut . . and I sit close enough up front, I can hear the priest say "The Body of Christ" and it's very meditative.
Karen - thanks for coming by and for the "bravo" (although the Pope said all this first) tee hee hee
scmom - exactly. I sit there and look down and try not to act annoyed. I used to look at people incredulously (and they look back like, "what? Oh, Hi! How are you?" They havne't a bloody clue!
couldnt agree more! at our parish in oregon things like this would happen. luckily here we have found an awesome parish...only altar boys, choir is in the loft and only accompanied by an organ, i could go on and on but at the end of mass, once the priest has left, everyone kneels down and aloud says the st michael the archangel prayer. it is wonderful!!!
