Where God, Family, and Country Are Everything (in proper order)
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.
V. Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created.
R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Happy Feast Day to you.
Thank you, Mimi.
I know this may sound daft, but I'm up for learning: do the Orthodox celebrate this, too? Do you have major feast days or days of obligation? Thanks,
Sarah
We have 12 Major Feasts and many minor feasts, one of which is today - the Conception of the Theotokos. We do not have the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception - we believe that Mary was conceived in the traditional way, and chose to not sin, but was not sinless by nature.
While it is a blessing to attend a Festal Liturgy, and something I try to do as often as I can as schedules allow, there is no "day of Obligation" theory in Orthodoxy, in that if you miss it, it is not a confessionable offense. (is that the right term?)
Mimi - sounds good to me. Thank you for enlightening me as to the Orthodox way of things. I suppose the theory is: we should WANT to be there and make EVERY effort to be. That's the point. But, I think many RC's are soft and in a way the Church has to INSIST on a few things to get people to do what they should want to do in the first place. It's all interesting to me.
