I just spent some serious cash on six new Ralph Lauren bath towels and four (RL) hand towels. Why? Um, because when I dried off my face in the shower this morning with what I thought was a crisp, clean towel, I got a whiff of sour-something. I just cleaned these towels! What is going on?
The kids, that's what is going on. They pile used towels on top of each other so that they aren't allowed to dry out properly.
I also got a six-pronged over the door hook. I printed up towel rules. They will have a lesson today after they get home from school.
Next time, they buy the new towels. It's in the rules.
*Ralph Lauren towels we got when we got married - 17 years ago - are still in use here. They have never frayed nor thinned out. So, I did spend more - even if on sale; yes they were on sale - for (hopefully) good quality towels. Still. Good quality towels fall prey to bad towel drying, hence the rules.

Try washing the old ones with a 1/2 cup of white vinegar. It works in my house!
Towel Rules!!! Ingenious! I'm concerned about my kids' ability to fully understand them though. They are very bright in other ways but seemingly simple commands like "Please flush the toilet" escape them.
ooo I love new towels!
But I agree, for the old ones, try vinegar in the wash, it does wonders on smells! I use it on my chinchilla cages, and recommend customers wash their cage liners with it to help with the smell.
I was brought up that you always wash towels in hot water and you always use Clorox bleach.. never had problems with smelly towels, they always smell Clorox fresh:-)
I love the rules idea, my kids leave towels on the floor and then I refuse to use them after they have sat on the wet floor picking up germs.. so I feel like I'm literally washing towels ALL THE TIME!!
I'll try the vinegar approach. I always use HOT water . . . well, as hot as I can here in HI where the water temperature depends upon the SUN. Chief says the tank is hooked up to electric, but I keep reading that the panel on the roof is what gives it to us . . . the water has never been too hot for us here. Hot enough, but not scalding (like I would like it to be for my towel and white washes).
Also, a few new towels are in order . . . we've had some of these things beyond their time (extreme frayed edges). But only a few. I think I'll save the icky ones for the dog. She likes a soft bed. ;)
I'll AMEN the vinegar, but also try ozyclean (I put a scoop in every load to keep the front loader smell away). I can just imagine that this is what will happen in my house once I stop getting kids out of the tub!
Sarah! First, I love your comment disclaimer. Second, Wow! I haven't been to your blog in so long - it's a different blog! :-)You must be loving Hawaii and I am still so sorry we never got together when you were in Maryland.
Just wanted to thank you for your comments today - those were good good questions and advice. My husband is all for it, and would bw willing to help, but I love the idea of a family mission statement! That would have never crossed my mind. I re-read my post and I sound like someone trying to talk myself out of it. Another day and you would see a post in which I talk myself into it! ha ha! I don't know where I'm at, but you give good guidance. Thanks again! :-)
Cassie - thanks on many fronts. You know, it's highly possible we'll be back in MD by 2012 (Summer) if . . . he gets Master Chief before then and wants to stay in and we can't do a back to back tour here (we'll keep it an option since we like it here as well as we liked it in MD), or, if he does/doesn't get MC and retires and MD has the best job for him. Minnesota is in our "dream" retirement plan - will likely happen sooner after retirement if he does troops to teachers program. Anyway, God has been very good to us and we'll go where the doors open, by His Grace.
I love new towels! Hoping to get some this year!
Good job on the towels...quite often you do "get what you pay for!" :)
I make my own version of Oxyclean. 1/2 20 mule team borax and 1/2 Arm and Hammer WASHING soda (not baking soda) I add about an old fashioned coffee scooper's worth to my towels and Hubby & Son's running clothes when I wash them. No more smell! It's awesome!!
Love the towel rules.
we recently have smelly washing due to our older boys weeding (for a summer job) and when they weed onions the smell gets in everything. It is so overpowering.
I also love your blurb above the comments. Good for you.
I have enjoyed looking around your blog.
I will be back for more inspiration
God Bless
we have that same problem here too. and it is SO the kids. when we had a pool they used to do the same thing. pile up tons of dirty towels. and it is a serious pet peeve of my husbands to get out of a bath and wipe down with a smelly towel. so i am constantly buying odor eaters, fabric softeners, etc. but you are right about the ralph lauren towels. they are worth their weight in cotton. i love the way they don't fade. and are so soft and yummy. i have some yellow and red ones that i kept for years. got rid of 'em only because i changed the color of my bathroom!
have a blessed weekend dearie!
Boy can I relate to that... except it's not just the kids -my husband can't seem to hang towels up, either... or get clothes in the hamper instead of next to it, OR put new toilet paper rolls on... not that I'm bitter about it! Good luck with your new towels... we need some for the master bath as well... same reasons, AND ours are 'dirty' looking even after washing, as they're light blue. Going for a sand-colored brown next time!
