In my effort (yeah, right!) to "ring in" the New Year, I opened up a bottle of wine that had been given us.
Ach! It was the worst.wine.ever. Mind, it was screw top, which I open with mistrust anyway. And, I am NOT a wine person. My knowledge is only my palate. If I don't like it, that's the end of it.
So, I opened the bottle of pinot noir and tried that. It's okay. I won't buy it again, but I can drink it.
But, I was thirsty, so I got myself some ice water to drink first. When I consumed the last chunk of ice, I put the glass down . . . knocking the full, mind you, glass of wine all over Shine-ola. Two Longaberger baskets: bathed. In one basket, all of my unopened (thank God) cross stitch kits (easy wipe down; two smaller kits were put into zip locks) . . . but my British Bear got the brunt of it. I'll be Oxy-Cleaning it as much as I can until I get the very soft purple (but noticeable) stains out. I put too many hours into stitching that dern bear, so I'll put in overtime effort there. The gorgeous table cloth my sister gave me . . . I think was worse, but I quickly ran it through the washer and it looks great. Of course, it is light blue and patterned and most folks would never notice any stains . . . as far as I can tell, and I really really really looked, it is okay.
I can't believe I did not freak out. I just set to cleaning it all up. I had to throw out two expensive cross stitch magazines . . . soaked. I think they got the worst, actually, aside from the table cloth. Lucky, I think!
The locals were out blasting the skies to kingdom come last night. I was warned, but wow! The fireworks and firecrackers were popping on and off the last couple of nights, but last night? Wow. Constant. Loud. Relentless smell of smoke. I think they started up in earnest after 6:30pm and some time after midnight I was too knackered to notice and fell asleep . . . but it was after midnight and we were still hearing them . . . and, to be honest, feeling them. See, we have behind us (sea level) a rather large mountainous region, from whence the sounds made here (sea level) reverberate so that, perhaps, we get three times the sound from fireworks that say, somewhere flat with no mountains would get. Secretly, it's kind of cool.
There's a gecko in my room. He was spotted last night. He was downstairs the night before, but he is in here now and . . . well, he is harmless, but it is still kind of creepy. They move faster than cockroaches, folks. He will have to march outta here on his own accord. We'll never.catch.him.
May God bless you on the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.

Many blessings for 2010, my friend!
how much wine did you "try" before you decided it was not very good. :)And are you sure that was water in your glass? When we were in Guam we had to beware of the gunshots, fireworks would have been nice. As for the gecko, I never could sleep until it was found and scooted out of my room. We closed the sliding door on one once and thought it was a gonner..saw it later and it was missing 90% of it's tail and a leg. But still going strong! Weird creatures.
I only had two sips of the red; one of the white (that stuff was like gym socks, I swear). I did not even finish the little bit left in my glass (that hadn't spilled out). I simple gave up and said it wasn't worth it.
I think I'll stick to beer.
Yeah, I don't like wine much either.
That's good that you got the stains out, I hope your British Bear turns out okay too!
The firecrackers are horrible aren't they? I was visiting my sis one year over New Years and all over in the streets people were setting them off.
Some people here last night were setting fireworks off at midnight. I thought they were crazy. We're in Wisconsin with snow on the ground! And it's gotta be like 10 degrees out!
Geckos are cute! I'd like to have one in my room! Last time we were in HI, Steve tried to catch one and the poor things tail came off. :( So I'd be inclined to leave it..
No fireworks here, but the older boys, Andy and I made it to midnight. Can't say much past that! Happy New Year!
Hey - can you answer me this one? My hubbie noticed that Hawaii does not have a holy day of obligation for today - he was trying to go with the spirit of Hawaii and get out of going to church. Do you know anything about this??
Thanks,
Cor
Corinne - We attend the military chapels here . . . I know that there was a 9am Mass at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Chapel and a 10:30am Mass at AMR (the crater; army). I haven't a clue about the diocese of HI on this . . . If the diocese is saying "let it go" EVEN IF IT IS PATHETIC TO DO SO IN MY HUMBLE OPINION I guess you can let it go . . . BUT only in the diocese you are affiliated/connected with. That's my understanding.
Anyone?
I guess I mean to say, since we are military, our Bishop is Archbishop Broglio from the Archdiocese of the Military. We are obedient to that particular archdiocese. We could join a local chapel and end up under Bishop Silva's care and leadership, I suppose, but I think we would have to have permission or something from Archbishop Broglio. I know in reverse, if anyone retired or outside the military (DOD employees) have to seek their Bishop's approval for Sacraments etc. if they wanted to be part of the military chapel.
Anyone? Corrections or clarifications are certainly welcome.
Oh, one more thing...Blog Award over at my place for you!!
