I feel pretty fantastic, thank you. I have no idea what today will bring me (other than one day into my 40th year, which, is pretty cool, actually). No plans. NO idea what, if anything, my kids or husband have planned. I told the kids that a nice orchid w/ instructions how to keep it alive (ahem) would be perfectly nice (and not going to break the bank). I'll be baking my own cake 'cos I like to, really. I make a mean chocolate fudge frosting. But, I'll take the day any way it comes, because I am a big kid on the inside. I'll watch Emma, that much I know.
So, I'm going to give away this stuff to celebrate. If you want to win all this stuff in the picture below, leave me a comment and see where luck may take you! Not in the picture are these items: a 'red dirt shirt' (I can't buy one not knowing the winner's size) and a bag of Hershey's Macadamia Nut kisses (I will buy them FRESH).
WAIT!!!
Let's make this more interesting. I know you all want the Hershey's kisses. Just leaving me your name is kinda boring for me. Leave me a comment that tells me about your least or favourite birthday and why. If you do not do this simple thing (for giggles on my part), your name won't be put in the drawing. It's that give and take thing see. Okay. Have fun!
I wish you all well. I'm off to blow out candles before my cake explodes!
*winner announced tomorrow on the Feast of St. Teresa of Avila*
btw, just a film plug for families wanting good, clean films for 6th-12th grades/adults: at Target I found a Haley Mills film called "Trouble With Angels" for $5. DVD. In the kids stuff. BARGAIN and a brilliant film!

I just borrowed "The Trouble with Angels" and it's sequel Where Angels go...Trouble follows" from my MIL.
My best or worst birthday memory? My 12th. It was my golden birthday. I had been looking forward to it for several years. My dad died three months before my birthday, and my grandpa (his dad) died the week before my birthday. My mom still had the party for me, but her heart wasn't in it. None of our hearts were in it.
I hope you have a wonderful and fun-filled day!
Let's call it my most memorable birthday. You can classify it as my least or most favorite birthday as you choose. On my 24th birthday I labored 12 hours to give birth to our 1st son. David is now 38...nearly 39 and now he has 5 wonderful children. (That's Grandma talking!)
I offer you many happy returns of the day. Happy Birthday and Happy Blogiversary!!! Cathy :)
Happy birthday, and may you have a happy and healthy year ahead! My Polish in-laws would sing "Sto lat" to you today--"may you live 100 years!"
Little Brother's teacher showed them "The Trouble With Angels" when they were stuck inside for recess during a rainy week last year. He was so excited to hear that I'd seen and enjoyed the movie too. It's SO fun! Thanks for the heads up on Target--this will be a great Christmas gift for Little Brother (shh! Don't tell!)
As to birthdays, my least favorite was probably the first one I spent away from my family. I was 2 weeks away from finishing my master's degree, living in a university apartment. My roommate may or may not have known it was my birthday. It was late July and HOT in the Midwest, and all we had was a tiny 8-inch fan to cool us off. We carried it from room to room. I was anxiously waiting for the results of my comprehensive exams and trying to finish up the papers for my 2 summer classes.
Happy Happy Birthday my dear dear friend!
My worst birthday was my 16th. I really wanted a big sweet sixteen party but it turns out that no one wished me happy birthday until the end of the day and it was completely low key. No big deal. My teenage, selfish, narcissistic personality had a big bummer that day. Still wish I could be 16 again though :) Those were good days...and I was so dern skinny!:) p.s. my word verificatin is "glonot"..so much for vanity and pride huh?!
I honestly cannot remember a bad birthday. I do remember being particularly hormonal when I turned 38 and was pregnant with Christopher. No one could do anything right for me. I would just bite their heads off. Looking back now, I can see that everyone did try to make it a good day but I was just feed up. I was only 21 weeks pregnant too.
Happy Birthday. 40 is great.
Hey, Sarah, Happy Birthday!! My bad, it's early in the morning and I had to delete my comment and start over! :p
OK, like Therese, I haven't really had a "worst" birthday. It's falls near Christmas and it's always been low-key. For my 40th my family threw me a party, and my in-laws, including BIL and SIL, bought us two tickets to see "Wicked" in NYC, plus a airfare and night's stay in Manhattan. The best birthday present ever!
I think if I win, I'll enjoy reading the Hawaiian word book out loud to my family. I drove my hubby crazy on our honeymoon when we visited HI, trying to pronounce all the names of the streets in Honolulu and giggling my head off.
Just wanted to wish a dear girl a Happy Birthday! May God bless you with abundant graces this year. I will say a special prayer for you today, Sarah.
Happy Birthday!
Those forkchops are awesome!
I think my best birthday was this last one. Birthdays aren't as fun for me anymore like they were when I was little and got a huge party, but I've come to enjoy the little things. It was the best because I got to spend it with my boyfriend, and he took me to the zoo. I love zoos! And only getting to see each other normally twice a month made it even more special. I'm pretty easy to please though, so I haven't had too many horrible birthdays :)
Happy Birthday, Sarah!
I won't enter the contest BECAUSE you just sent me those precious gifts and I want someone else to have a little part of Sarah. :)
My worst birthday, though, probably was my 19th. I believe I was very emotional (could have been PMSing too, who knows), but the idea of turning into the very last year of childhood/teens absolutely frightened me so and then to know I was going to be a young married woman in approx. one month after that..felt ..no turning back..I cried my "arse" off as you call it and could not stop..depression and fear encompassed me! I couldn't even believe my own reaction, but could not stop it. It took several days to get over it, but it still lingered for awhile. Yes, I think that might have been the worst ...guess I was too busy with kids and goings on later to feel sorry for myself beyond that one..39 didn't bother me..nor did 40..50 a little but 56...hmmmm...ha! Still, I'm smiling, so???
Hugs to you!
Oh!! PS .. My best birthday was on Sept. 3, 1981...I had become a new mother on Aug. 27th after trying since 1973 to get pregnant! My little miracle was in my arms and I was so thankful! :)
Happy Birthday to you! Have a fantastic day. I still think of us as young so don't let that number fool you!!!!!
I have to say that my funniest bday involved you & E. She was driving that old truck & my bday cake was on the dashboard & some how ended up going out the window onto the ground. We laughed & laughed. Those were good times :)
Happy Big 40 to my blogging friend and many mooooooore!
May God Bless you today and always.
Those comments were really interesting to read.
My 13th birthday our hunting dog totally devoured my b-day cake.
My 18th...my mother let me have a keg party (i know i know what was she thinking) and someone stoled all the money I collected to pay for the keg. Someone broke the front off our dryer and the banister going downstairs. People in the flower gardens. Puke downstairs. Stupid stupid stupid. 19th drank too much again. 21st drank too much again. (ya see the pattern here)
Any birthday after I got married is a great one surrounded by my dh, now kiddos and family and friends.
(when my dh turned 40 we silly stringed him when he got up. my youngest was totally traumatized by this and cried and cried. funny!
Hope you have a fun sunny day!
Happy 40th birthday and may God bless you abundantly!!!
Wish I could have some of that fudge frosting with you!
Worst b-day: the year I left my ex husband (that week)I turned 25 and it's just a blurr, I know my friends at work tried to make it nice for me, but it just wasn't.
Best b-day:
The 2 years I had baby's a week before, Mary Hannah and Sweetie Pie are both born about a week before me!
I'm always usually kind of sad before my b-days (except the 2 mentioned above) then when the day comes I am so surprised at how many wonderful friends I have and the day is always wonderful, except that first one mentioned!
Oh, yeah, love the sunset picture above, beautiful!!
Oh, my mom's dad died on her 16th birthday, sad, huh?
Happy, Happy Birthday to you! Many Years
Pretty nifty idea you've got here, Sarah...keeping things lively! But there is a HUGE omission...the birthday girl did not give her favorite or least favorite birthdays! This probably means you won't be in the drawing for one of your own gifts!!
First, let me say
H A P P Y
B I R T H D A Y
and may the Good Lord bless you with many more!!
Off the top of my head I have two favorite birthdays (yeah, yeah, I just gotta be wacko). The first is a fun and funny one...my sweet mom wanted me to have a special boy/girl sixteenth party, so I did the inviting but all the guys I knew were old boyfriends except for two!! Made for a very interesting party and got me back with my old boyfriend once he pretended to be interested in another friend from my all girl's high school!!
The very best was my 21st birthday that my late beloved hubby Mario put together (even though he was headed for Viet Nam) at a lovely restaurant with all the family from both sides and we were about to find out that I wasn't just getting chubby but that I was pregnant!
blessings and birthday hugs,
marcy
p.s. Alot more people would be commenting and all if you included two plane tickets to Hawaii...can you tell I'm tired and goofy?
Happy birthday to you!! Oh to see 40 again. As to my worst birthday?
It was my sons 40th birthday. Now I know that is not actually my birthday, but I have to tell you that was one bummer day for me, why? you ask? Because I had a terrible time coming to grips with the fact that I was old enough to have a child who was 40 years old!!! Even my husband commented on my mood that day.
Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday, dear Sarah...Happy Birthday to you!!
be glad you didn't have to hear that in person :)
Hope you had a wonderful day!!!
Happy birthday to you!
I can think of two bad birthday stories off the top of my head. One, my mom tells me I peed my pants after she got me all dressed up cute for my third birthday party. (I'm wearing my jammies in all the pictures from the party).
And I spent my thirtieth waiting for carpet installers to show up, which they did ... LATE. I still wanted to go out for dinner, which we did, with three kids, LATE, and one of them puked all over the table. Fun stuff.
As for happy birthdays, I remember turning twenty-four on our honeymoon. We're celebrating our ten-year anniversary and my birthday in the next week and a half.
Ah birthdays...I'm always excited for them, and always deflated when the day arrives. Since I have a late august birthday, it seems to get forgotten. My 37th, my sister was in town and invited my whole family to go sailing, including my son, but never invited me because she knew I had no one to watch the twins. I told her "it would have been nice to at least be asked." My 38th was so bad I bloggged about it ( http://twinfinn.blogspot.com/2008/08/38-candles.html ):basically my husband was out of town and at 2pm, I had to tell him everyone had forgotten. So I made my own cake and got distracted by my kids, and forgot to add the sugar. And after I had dished up the kids dinner, my parents called and asked if we would like to go out to dinner. I settled for take out. 39th was good...indulged myself in a massage and told everyone so they couldn't forget.
Hope your day is fantastic. Happy Birthday dear Friend.
Happy Birthday! Have a great day. That's all I want to say. (Other than, "40 seems so long ago".)
Happy, happy birthday, HI friend! You look great!
no entry, no fun or bad birthdays. . . all boring and normal.
hope you have a GREAT day!!

Happy Birthday, Sarah!! May God bless this new year—and this new decade—with abundant grace, joy and peace!
Happy Birthday, Sarah-kala! May God continue to bless you.
And welcome to the 40 Club (44 here). Glad you could make it!
No birthday stories from me, though. I can barely remember last month as it is!
Thanks for being such a loyal reader of my wee humble blog.
Enjoy your cake!!
Happy Birthday,Sarah!
I don't want to enter the contest (since I already won the amazing pin cushion), but I'll share that my worst birthday was in 1963 when my birthday fell on the day after President Kennedy was assassinated. My mom sat and watched TV all day and cried, and no one remembered that it was my birthday. It was okay though, because I sure didn't feel like celebrating.
no entry. my brain can't think up any bad b-day story/memories. but just wanted to wish you well dearest lady.
hugs. hugs. hugs.
Well, this birthday was the best and the worst at the same time, I guess... It was my 26th, in 1998. Why was it so memorable? Well, on the upside, I was pregnant with my first, Jacob. The downer was that my grandma died just a few days earlier. Which is why my son has two middle names (Lucas in honor of her, it was her last name). It was also my first birthday in AZ. Again, good (a new place and a new life, marriage and kid!) and bad (missing my family and friends like crazy, with no new friends yet!). At any rate, this definitely isn't funny, probably isn't very interesting, but it's the best I've got! I honestly can't remember any of my other birthdays (is that weird?)
Anywho! HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my bloggin' buddy... and happy blog-a-versary, too!
Love to ya!
Happy Birthday, Sarah. You ROCK!!!
Since my birthday is thirteen minutes to midnight on New Years Eve, all my birthdays are good. Heck, the whole world shoots off fireworks just for moi! How cool is that???
Happy belated! Forty can be lots of fun, you seem to be a fun-loving girl so I'm sure you will enjoy this year very much! Also, happy blogging anniversary! Your blog is wonderful, you do a great job! I love your new header-gorgeous!
Belated birthday blessings Sarah! I read this on my new iphone and had no idea how to reply properly on the keyboard with the x9 stupid thingy making all sorts of words up on its own. Offered up my day for you, plus my rosary that same day, an honor for my blogging friend in Hawaii! :) God bless, hope all the cake was delicious. heehee
Renee - what a wonderful thing you have done for me. Thank you so much, from the depths of my heart. I feel so chuffed (pleased).
