The Ups & Downs of This Life

Holly is a pain in the rump. Literally. Yesterday I caught her consuming her chew rope. I discarded it once I distracted her long enough to get it free from her. I had no idea how much of it I'd see in the yard later . . . This morning I got a good idea. She struggled something fierce to crap out an immense amount of rope. Let's just say I had to lend a hand . . . and try not to puke. Fun! All BEFORE my morning coffee. Well, that was probably a good thing.

I have to figure out my MIL's email address - search our email archives for it - so I can email her this picture of the kids. The primary purpose of the kids getting such a beautiful camera for Christmas from (husband's side) uncles and aunts was to snap up pictures to email Grandma - the machine prints out pictures for her. Well, 97.5% of the camera is clogged with pictures of the cat and the dog! It's the girl's fault.
Anyway, the eldest two fight.constantly. I should amend that to "bicker endlessly". I know it's a phase, but it's just really super annoying, especially when I'm recovering and can't hear properly. All I hear is noise, you know? I want to help, but then I can't. It's teen stuff. It's sibling obnoxiousness. No amount of my Mother Goosing them is going to help (you know: if you can't say something nice . . . . or was that Jimminy Cricket???). Anyhoo -
The oldest boy called from school after his first class yesterday: I'm sick, he says. Lovely. With him home nothing gets done school-wise with the other two. He was miserable until the OTC meds kicked in. Then he was just "bored" (I limited his PC gaming to two hours, you see, because if you're sick, you aren't going to get away with gaming all bloody day; tho' he handled the limit very well). Boredom means: complaining, not being happy with mum's suggestions, and being a general nuisance to his siblings whilst they try to focus on school because with him home and him not doing anything remotely close to school work begs their point of "why should we?" I really really really hate that!
Needlesstosay: the eldest is in class today. He's been OTC medicined up this AM and should be good at least through lunch. I don't want him to be sick. I want him to be well for his sake - his wellbeing. However, I also very selfishly want him to stay in school so that the other two can get their schooling done. Also, the county sent me a letter threatening legal action should we not provide excuse notes for absences - he was getting a letter for missing more than three days in a marking period . . . I sent notes - even a doctor's note . . . no legal action is being taken, the letter was simply a "notice" or "warning", but I found it intrusive and bullying!!

When you are sick and unable to school in our house (whether homeschool or school-school) you are quarantined and in bed! It makes them really think about whether or not they are so sick they can't school.

It is difficult in those situations, I know too well, also. I think the truth is just like your one commentor said...sick enough stays in room..reading, sleeping..its not easy, but the times I've done it...helps. They do think and make sure if they want to stay home or not more and the others see you mean business. Its hard to see em feeling so bad though. How are you today? Gotta run my girl to college! Later!

Ok....why has nobody commented on the situation with the dog yet?? Excuse me commentors but there was a situation over yonder that involved a half-deaf uncaffinated woman pulling something out of a dogs rear!

Trust me, I have to bring the time down to a respectable level FIRST with this older kid. If I said no gaming at all, he's be a beast. A little is better than nothing and I get a compliant kid. I have reduced his allowable time when sick by a huge margine. I have a spine - it's just still a wee tad soft, yeah? I'm getting there. But what he doesn't know: when we move, World of Warcraft is going bye-bye. I'm not paying $15 a month any longer to have him sass me and be unappreciative. He's not bad, he's just acting up like a typical teen - but I tell him all the time that we aren't raising typical teens, we are raising responsible (I hope), loving, parent-adult-Church respecting, hard-workers, God-fearing etc etc people. It's a work in progress.

Christine - I almost titled this piece "You Should Have Heard Her Yelp!" She yelped the FIRST time I gently tugged twelve inches of rope from her arse. There was already a good twelve inches she was dragging about. A few minutes later when it became apparent that the tuft still remaining wasn't coming out on its own, I grabbed another bag and . . . another twelve inches, at least. She's good to go now, though. UGH! It makes me gag just to think about it. But, she's my little girly doggie and I have to help her out, yeah?

Regina - yup. I am born and raised Bainbridge Island. I graduated from BHS in 1988, met and married my navy boy in 1992 and have gone back to visit about five times since. Not often enough, but we're trying to stop in on our way to moving to HI. I can't wait to see REAL HUGE trees again!!

Regina - oh the Brit thing? I'm just mad, is all. :-) Actually, as a child I followed PBS's broadcasts of BBC stuff . . . then in the 1980's watching MTV and in high school having pen friends in Chelsea, London . . . etc., reading British Literature and just being a major anglophile . . . I've a lovely "fake" accent, actually. I'm not pretending to be British - I just picked up the slang and kept using it for fun and now it's a part of me. :-) Please forgive me, I'm just theatrical and looney.
