Hey Boo,
At a recent book reading, Sherman Alexie shared with the audience a chapter from his latest novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Afterwards, a woman, who was putting on an air of sophisication, asked "In one of your books, the character, Thomas Builds A Fire, seems to be spiritually connected . . .kind of, how should I say it, . . . wu wu", sounding completely out of touch with her inner native.
Mr Alexie put his head on the podium and stated: "next question." Then said, "No, really, that is the studpidest question I've ever heard." He put his head down again. The room was absolutely still; a bunch of caucasion liberals listening to a Native American author speaking about life on and off the rez.
Sherman then put his head up, grinned a large grin, and said, "I am Catholic. I eat the Messiah every Sunday. It doesn't get much more wu wu than that!"
:)"Hope people enjoy this one
Mary
For those who would like to read or at least check this interestingly, funny writer out, his blog is www.shermanalexie.com .
On another note: I have to add, if any of you remember the story from my old blog about my sister and her girl coming to see us over the summer . . . We had gone to the Native American Museum in D.C. Everyone was talking about what their Indian name would be. My youngest, a cheese connoisseur, quipped, "Mine would be: Eats Everything With Cheese." The book my sister referred to is a gift to said son, inscribed to him with his "Indian" name. Cheeky. Said son will hold off on reading said book for a few years, as she made mention there are questionable parts in it. Still. I know I'm going to read it.

Tee hee.
He was the commencement speaker at my College graduation.
Mimi - my sis has been a big fan of his forever. She attended EWU in Spokane. I wish she liked classics . . . she is very contemporary. Some contemporary is alright (esp. No.1 Detective Agency; Bridget Jones . . . ), but I can't stand Stephen King, Danielle Steel and some others . . . oh, not to mention the very awful The Shack. Tee hee.
How's the weather? I miss my old home!
I have to admit, while I enjoyed his speech very much, I've not read him.
I also read a lot of contemporary novels, but agree, there is a lot of trash out there.
It is still crisp and clear, it's been beautiful. Come visit!
Wow, Sherman Alexie. I read his first novel (can't even remember the name of it) years ago and loved it, but never really sought him out again. Not for any reason other than I didn't think of it. I would have never guessed he was Catholic. How interesting!! I really do remember loving that first novel...guess I'll be checking him out at the library next time I'm there! Thanks for reminding me of this talented author.
